The Chef

Laurent Beaumont

Chef Propriétaire & Founder

Born in Lyon, trained under Joël Robuchon in Paris, and drawn to America by the restless appetite of its diners, Laurent Beaumont arrived in Charleston in 1994 with a single valise and a grandmother's recipe book. He opened Maison Laurent in a converted 19th-century carriage house on King Street, and the city has never been the same.

Chef Laurent's kitchen is governed by a simple creed: respect the ingredient, honor the tradition, and allow the season to lead. His brigade sources daily from Lowcountry farms and the early-morning docks at Shem Creek, folding Carolina shrimp into bisques that could make a Marseillaise weep.

Three decades on, the restaurant holds two Michelin stars and remains, to its regulars, simply the best table in the city — unhurried, generous, and unmistakably French.

As Others Have Written

★★ Michelin Guide — 2023 & 2024

"Maison Laurent is not a restaurant one visits — it is one one returns to, again and again, because nowhere else in the South does time slow quite so pleasurably."

— The Michelin Guide, Southern United States

James Beard Foundation — Best Chef: Southeast, Nominee 2022

"Beaumont's sole meunière is a lesson in restraint from a chef who could easily show off — and that, precisely, is why it is perfect."

— The New York Times, Dining

Wine Spectator — Grand Award, 2019–2024

"In thirty years of reviewing restaurants, I have encountered perhaps a handful that felt truly inevitable — Maison Laurent is one of them."
